Our journey begins with a short drive to the hauntingly beautiful expanse of Culloden Moor. On April 16, 1746, this field was the site of the last pitched battle fought on British soil. In less than an hour, the Jacobite Rising came to a brutal and bloody end, changing the Highland way of life forever.
With your private guide, you will have ample time to walk the battlefield, trace the front lines marked by the red and blue flags, and visit the poignant memorial cairn and Clan grave markers. We highly recommend spending time in the state-of-the-art Culloden Visitor Centre, where an immersive 360-degree battle theater and fascinating artifacts bring the history vividly to life.
Just a few minutes down a quiet, leafy country road from Culloden lies Balnuaran of Clava, better known as Clava Cairns. Stepping out of your luxury vehicle, you are instantly transported back 4,000 years. This prehistoric site is an exceptionally well-preserved Bronze Age cemetery complex, enveloped by a serene woodland atmosphere.
Wander among the ring cairns, passage graves, and monolithic standing stones. For fans of Outlander, this site is legendary. Its mystical energy and the famous “split stone” are widely considered to be the real-world inspiration for the fictional Craigh na Dun. Listen to the wind rustling through the ancient trees—you might just feel the urge to touch a stone and travel through time!

Yes! There is a very famous, towering split stone at Clava Cairns. While it hasn't sent anyone back to 1743 (that we know of!), it is a fantastic photo opportunity for Outlander fans and a truly mystical piece of ancient history.
Absolutely. Highland Private Journey specializes in bespoke experiences. If you want to extend this into a full-day tour by adding Cawdor Castle, Fort George, or a nearby whisky distillery (like Tomatin or Glen Ord), simply let us know when booking, and we’ll create a custom itinerary.
Both sites are relatively flat and accessible. Culloden Battlefield has well-maintained, paved and gravel paths that are wheelchair and stroller friendly. Clava Cairns is flat but consists of grassy and slightly uneven terrain. Because this is a private tour, we walk entirely at your pace, and you can do as much or as little walking as you desire.
