Leave the roadside viewpoints behind and step directly into the wild with the Private Isle of Skye Adventure Tour by Highland Private Journey. Designed for active travelers, outdoor enthusiasts, and adventurous families, this bespoke tour takes you off the beaten path and onto the most spectacular hiking trails in the Scottish Highlands.
The Isle of Skye is a world-class destination for rugged mountain scenery, but experiencing it on a crowded tour bus means missing out on the real magic. On this private adventure, you dictate the pace. Whether you want to summit a dramatic ridge, hike to crystal-clear plunge pools, or capture the perfect sunrise photograph, your expert private guide will get you to the trailheads safely and comfortably.
Boots on the Ground: Swap the vehicle for the trails and physically immerse yourself in Skye’s otherworldly landscapes.
The Fairy Pools Hike: Trek along the base of the Black Cuillin mountains to discover these legendary, crystal-clear blue plunge pools.
Conquer the Storr: Hike up the Trotternish Ridge to stand directly beneath the towering rock pinnacles of the Old Man of Storr.
The Quiraing Circuit: Walk along one of the most spectacular geological landslips in the world, offering views that will take your breath away.
Rugged West Coast Scenery: Explore dramatic coastal cliffs, hidden glens, and rugged shores that larger vehicles simply cannot reach.
Premium Recovery: After a long, wet, or muddy hike, return to a luxury, climate-controlled vehicle where you can rest, warm up, and enjoy the scenic drive home.
Because this is a private Highland journey, we tailor the physical intensity and hiking routes completely to your group’s fitness and interests. A typical adventure-focused itinerary can include:
The Fairy Pools: Located in Glen Brittle, this moderate 1.5 to 2-hour round-trip hike takes you past a series of magical cascading waterfalls. Feeling brave? Pack your swimsuit for a spot of wild swimming in the freezing, crystal-clear waters!
The Old Man of Storr: This iconic hike (approx. 2 hours round-trip) involves a steep ascent up a well-maintained path. The reward? Standing right at the base of the towering basalt columns with panoramic views over the Sound of Raasay.
The Quiraing: For those looking for dramatic, sweeping landscapes, a hike along the Quiraing offers towering cliffs, hidden plateaus, and rock pinnacles like “The Prison” and “The Needle.”
Neist Point Lighthouse: Take a coastal walk down the steep cliff paths to the most westerly point of Skye. It is a fantastic location for spotting dolphins, whales, and seabirds over the crashing waves of the Atlantic.
Hiking in the Scottish Highlands requires planning, local knowledge, and an understanding of our notoriously fast-changing weather. With Highland Private Journey, you don’t have to worry about navigating narrow, winding single-track roads or finding parking at busy trailheads. We drop you right at the start of the action, monitor the weather, and provide a warm, luxurious space to recover with a hot drink after your trek.
Duration: Epic Full-Day Tour (approx. 10–12 hours) or upgrade to a Multi-Day Adventure!
Activity Level: Moderate to Active. Expect uneven terrain, steep inclines, and 2-4 hours of walking depending on your chosen itinerary.
Departure Point: Ideally suited for pick-ups in and around Inverness.
Group Size: Exclusive to your private party.
Don’t just look at the mountains—climb them. Embark on a private Scottish adventure you will remember for a lifetime.
This tour is customized to you, but to get the most out of it, guests should have a moderate level of fitness. Hikes to the Fairy Pools and the Old Man of Storr involve uneven gravel paths, rocky steps, and some steep, continuous inclines. If you prefer flat, short walks, we recommend our standard Isle of Skye & West Coast Tour instead!
If you are doing a 1-day trip from Inverness, there simply isn't enough time to complete all three major hikes and drive the 5+ hours required for the round trip. For a day trip, we ask guests to choose one or two main hikes to prioritize. If you want to hike all three, we strongly suggest booking a 2-day or 3-day multi-day tour.
The weather on Skye changes rapidly, so preparation is key! You must wear sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with good grip. We also highly recommend wearing layers, packing a high-quality waterproof jacket (and waterproof trousers), and bringing a daypack for water and snacks. In the summer months, Scottish Midge repellent (like Smidge) is essential!
Your guide is an expert on the local area and will provide you with all the trail information, safety advice, and route instructions you need before dropping you at the trailhead. While they may accompany you on shorter walks, for longer treks like the Storr, they will generally wait with the vehicle to ensure it is secure, warm, and ready for you upon your return.
Welcome to Scotland! We hike rain or shine, as the dramatic weather often makes the waterfalls at the Fairy Pools and the mist around the Storr look even more magical. However, if the weather becomes dangerous (e.g., severe gales), your guide will use their local expertise to suggest alternative, safer routes or amazing indoor sightseeing alternatives.
Good 'ole Exodus!
