Sit back in our luxury vehicle as your expert local guide brings the stories of the Highlands to life.

Your Journey Through History: The Itinerary

Culloden Battlefield: The Last Stand of the Jacobites

Our journey begins at the hauntingly beautiful Culloden Moor. On April 16, 1746, this very ground was the site of the final, bloody clash of the Jacobite Rising. It was here that Bonnie Prince Charlie’s army faced government troops, changing the course of Scottish history forever.

Take a poignant walk along the front lines, pay your respects at the Clan grave markers (including the famous Clan Fraser stone), and visit the state-of-the-art Culloden Visitor Centre to discover the deeply moving stories of those who fought and fell.

Clava Cairns: Ancient Stones and Outlander Magic

Just a short drive from Culloden lies Balnuaran of Clava (Clava Cairns)—one of Scotland’s most evocative prehistoric sites. Dating back over 4,000 years, this incredibly preserved Bronze Age cemetery features fascinating passage graves, ring cairns, and towering standing stones.

For fans of Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander, this site is a must-visit. Its mystical atmosphere and split stones are widely regarded as the inspiration for the fictional Craigh na Dun. Listen closely to the wind through the trees—you might just hear the stones humming.

Cawdor Castle: A Fairytale Fortress

Our final historical destination is the romantic and majestic Cawdor Castle. Built in the late 14th century, this castle is famously forever linked to William Shakespeare’s Macbeth as the home of the Thane of Cawdor.

Unlike many ruins in the Highlands, Cawdor Castle remains a beloved, lived-in family home. Explore its opulent interiors, featuring fine tapestries, historic portraits, and antique furniture. Afterward, take a leisurely stroll through the estate’s spectacular grounds, which include a walled garden, a flower garden, and the wild beauty of the Cawdor Big Wood.

Highlights

  • Culloden Battlefield: Walk the emotional moors where the 1746 Jacobite Rising came to a tragic end.
  • Clava Cairns: Explore a mystical 4,000-year-old Bronze Age cemetery, famous for its standing stones and a major inspiration for Outlander’s Craigh na Dun.

Excellent, probably the best yet.

This was an amazing trip. Totally fell in love with Vietnam, We did so much in such in two weeks. The cycling, somehow. only felt like a small part of the experience as there were so many other things that we did. Each day was full on, exceptionally well organised, great food, etc Been on a few cycle trips, and I think this was the best one so far.

A Brilliant Trip

We have been on a couple of cycling trips before and this one was probably the best. Tri our guide was outstanding and all our fellow cyclists were a great bunch of people. We got a real flavour of life in Vietnam. Lots of interesting food. The meals were good and plentiful. Thought we would lose weight but didn't! Good Hotels. Many highlights but a couple or so to point out,Whale Island and Hoi An, the 30km exhilarating downhill ride and cycling in city centre traffic...... great fun but leaves your heart racing. It is quite full on which leaves you wanting to spend more time in some of the places visited. The usual pattern is arrive at 5 - 6 pm, leave at 7.15 next morning. However we did find time to swim in the hotel pools. Overnight train was great fun ....all part of the adventure. To cover the length of the country there are some longish times in the bus but the bus was comfortable but great chance to talk with your fellow travellers. This also gives you time to see more of the country and people watch. Staggered us how much could be piled on a scooter! The bikes were ideal for the road conditions as well as being clean and very well maintained. At the frequent refreshment/rest stops there was lots of juice, water, fruit, nuts and biscuits. The driver and bike mechanic were very friendly and very competent. Great organization, things happened when Tri said they would.
