Short on time but want to experience the full majesty of Scotland’s most famous loch? The Half Day Loch Ness Circular Tour by Highland Private Journey is the perfect solution.
Departing from Inverness, this exclusive 4-hour private journey takes you completely around the legendary waters of Loch Ness. Unlike standard tours that only visit the busy northern shore, our circular route ensures you never see the same scenery twice. You will experience the tranquil, untouched beauty of South Loch Ness before crossing over to the iconic landmarks of the Great Glen. It is a fast-paced, visually stunning adventure tailored completely to you.
360-Degree Views: Complete a full loop around Loch Ness, ensuring a dynamic journey with zero backtracking.
The Quiet South Side: Travel along the historic, single-track military roads of South Loch Ness, away from the tourist crowds.
Dores Beach & Nessie Hunting: Visit the spectacular Dores Beach for the best ground-level view of the loch and meet a real-life Nessie Hunter!
Falls of Foyers: Take a short woodland walk to witness a dramatic, cascading Highland waterfall.
Iconic Landmarks: Enjoy stunning viewpoints of Urquhart Castle and pass through the charming village of Drumnadrochit.
100% Private: Travel in absolute comfort and luxury with an expert local guide dedicated entirely to your group.
Our half-day itinerary is expertly crafted to give you the ultimate Loch Ness overview in just a few hours. While the route can be tweaked to your interests, a typical circular journey includes:
Dores Beach: We start by driving down the less-traveled South side to Dores. This beautiful pebble beach offers an uninterrupted, sweeping view down the majestic length of Loch Ness. It’s also home to Steve Feltham, the world-record-holding, full-time Loch Ness Monster hunter!
The Wild South Loch Ness Drive: We’ll journey along parts of General Wade’s historic military road. Here, the landscape is wilder, greener, and teeming with Highland wildlife, offering a peaceful contrast to the busier tourist routes.
The Falls of Foyers (Optional Stop): Plunging 165 feet into a gorge, this spectacular waterfall has inspired poets like Robert Burns. A short, steep walk rewards you with breathtaking views of the cascading water.
Fort Augustus: At the southern tip of the loch, we’ll cross the Caledonian Canal. You might even catch a glimpse of boats being raised and lowered through the impressive lock gates.
Urquhart Castle & The North Shore: Heading back up the famous A82 on the North side, we will stop at prime vantage points to photograph the dramatic, brooding ruins of Urquhart Castle from above.
Duration: Half-Day (approx. 4 hours)
Departure Point: Ideally suited for pick-ups in and around Inverness.
Group Size: Exclusive to your private party.
Perfect For: Travelers with limited time, cruise ship passengers docking nearby, or those arriving/departing later in the day.
Don’t let a tight schedule keep you from experiencing the legend of Loch Ness. See it all, from the hidden gems to the world-famous views.
Because this tour is around 6 hours long, it is best suited for guests departing from Inverness or the immediate surrounding area. We offer direct door-to-door pick-up from your Inverness hotel, guest house, or train station.
Yes! A half-day is the perfect amount of time to drive the full perimeter of the loch. While a full-day tour allows for long visits inside castles or hour-long boat rides, this half-day circular tour is a fantastic "highlights reel." You will get out for photos, short walks, and scenic viewpoints without feeling rushed.
To successfully complete the full circular drive within 6 hours, we typically do not schedule the 1.5 hours required to go inside the Urquhart Castle visitor centre. Instead, we stop at a spectacular roadside vantage point that offers arguably the best panoramic photo opportunities of the castle ruins! (If going inside the castle is a must, we recommend looking at our Full-Day Loch Ness Tour).
Because we are driving the complete 70-mile loop of the loch, adding a standard boat cruise usually pushes this itinerary over the 4-hour mark. If a boat cruise is your main priority, we can alter the route to focus solely on the North shore, or you can upgrade to our Full Day Tour. Just let us know what is most important to you!
We can't guarantee a sighting of Nessie, but by driving the complete 360-degree loop around her home, you are definitely maximizing your chances! Keep your eyes on the water.
Absolutely. We will make comfortable stops along the route in places like Dores, Foyers, or Fort Augustus where you can grab a quick coffee, use the facilities, and stretch your legs.
A Brilliant Trip
