Savor Scotland’s Finest Malts on a Bespoke Tasting Journey

Welcome to Highland Private Journey. There is no better place in the world to experience single malt Scotch whisky than right here in the Scottish Highlands. Our Private North Whisky Tour invites you to journey north of Inverness, tracing the picturesque shores of the Cromarty and Dornoch Firths, to explore some of Scotland’s most revered historic distilleries.

Forget the stress of navigating rural roads or drawing straws for the designated driver. Sit back in our luxury vehicle, take in the magnificent Highland scenery, and let your expert private guide transport you safely through an unforgettable day of history, craftsmanship, and world-class whisky tastings.

Your Journey Through the Casks: The Itinerary

Please note: Because this is a private tour, this itinerary is entirely customizable. We can adjust the route based on your specific whisky preferences and distillery availability.

The Dalmore Distillery: Royal Heritage & Sherry Casks

Departing Inverness, we head north across the Black Isle to the shores of the Cromarty Firth, arriving at The Dalmore. Founded in 1839, this distillery is world-renowned for its luxurious, complex whiskies, heavily influenced by maturation in exclusive Spanish sherry casks. Look out for the iconic 12-point royal stag emblem on every bottle—a symbol of the clan heritage that shaped this prestigious brand.

Glenmorangie Distillery: The Men of Tain

Continuing our journey north to the historic Royal Burgh of Tain, we reach the world-famous Glenmorangie Distillery. Sitting on the peaceful banks of the Dornoch Firth, Glenmorangie is celebrated for its delicate, fruity, and elegant single malts. On a tour here, you will stand in awe of their legendary copper pot stills—the tallest in Scotland, reaching the same height as an adult giraffe!

Balblair Distillery: Traditional Highland Charm

Tucked away in the village of Edderton is Balblair, one of the oldest working distilleries in the Scottish Highlands, dating back to 1790. Unlike the larger, more modernized brands, Balblair offers a highly intimate and traditional experience. With its charming stone buildings and old-world atmosphere, you’ll see firsthand how traditional, unhurried methods produce a beautifully rounded, vintage-focused single malt.

Highlights

  • The Dalmore: Discover the royal heritage and rich, sherry-cask finishes of this legendary Highland malt.
  • Glenmorangie: Marvel at the tallest copper pot stills in Scotland and taste their famously smooth, floral spirit.
  • Balblair: Step back in time at one of Scotland’s oldest and most picturesque distilleries (famous for its appearance in the film The Angels' Share).
  • Guilt-Free Tasting: Relax and enjoy every dram with your own private luxury transport and local guide.
  • Bespoke Luxury: Want to swap a distillery or add a historic photo stop? The day is completely tailored to your tastes.

Tour's Location

Do we need to book the distillery tours in advance?

Yes, highly recommended! Distillery tours and premium tastings often sell out weeks or even months in advance, especially during the summer. Once you book your transport with us, we strongly advise securing your tour tickets with the distilleries directly. If you need advice on timings, we are happy to help.

Can we customize the distilleries we visit?

Absolutely. This is your private tour! If you are a fan of another Northern distillery—such as Clynelish (the home of Johnnie Walker Gold Label), Glen Ord (The Singleton), or even Tomatin—just let us know and we will design a custom route specifically for your palate.

Are the tasting fees included in the tour price?

No, tasting and distillery tour fees are not included. We leave this separate because distilleries offer various tiers of experiences—from basic 3-dram tastings to extensive, premium warehouse masterclasses. This allows you complete financial control over your whisky experience.

Can we buy bottles of whisky on the tour?

Yes! All the distilleries have fantastic gift shops featuring exclusive, distillery-only bottlings you cannot find in stores back home. Because you are traveling in our spacious luxury vehicle, you will have plenty of secure trunk space to store your purchases safely.

Is this tour suitable for non-whisky drinkers?

Yes, non-whisky drinkers are very welcome and will still have a wonderful day! The drive North is incredibly scenic, passing firths, mountains, and historic villages. While the whisky lovers are doing their tastings, non-drinkers can explore local towns like Dornoch, visit nearby castles, or simply enjoy a coffee and the beautiful Highland landscapes.

Fantastic Trip

I am a little late in posting a review. We returned from this trip in early March, right when everything started to close down due to Covid-19. I can tell you that the memories of this trip have kept me going while sheltering in place. If you are thinking this might be the trip for you, please know that it is very fast paced with moving from place to place almost every night was quite challenging. The cycling itself was challenging based on ones fitness level. My husband completed every kilometer, while I did about three-quarters of the cycling. A lot of it depends on the heat, but for a female in my early 50s, I found it very doable. We had the most fabulous guide and crew. I cannot say enough of about our guide Son - he was absolutely amazing - taking care of all the details while we enjoyed ourselves. There are plenty of water/snack stops with fresh fruit and amazing snacks (ginger/nuts/cookies). They take very good care of you.
