Black Isle Half Day Tour: Wildlife, History & Coastal Charm

Just a stone’s throw from the bustling city of Inverness lies one of the Scottish Highlands’ best-kept secrets: the beautiful Black Isle. Despite its name, it isn’t an island at all, but a stunning peninsula rich in Celtic folklore, dramatic coastline, and incredible wildlife.

Our Private Black Isle Half Day Tour is the perfect bespoke getaway for travelers who have limited time but still want to experience authentic Highland magic. At Highland Private Journey, we take you away from the crowds and into the tranquil beauty of this coastal haven. Whether you want to hunt for the resident bottlenose dolphins, stroll through ancient fairy woodlands, or sip coffee in an 18th-century seaport, this luxury 4-hour journey is tailored completely to your pace.

🌟 Tour Highlights: At a Glance

  • Chanonry Point Dolphins: Visit the best land-based location in the UK to spot the famous Moray Firth bottlenose dolphins playing in the surf.

  • Historic Cromarty: Step back in time in this beautifully preserved 18th-century seaport, famous for its quaint cottages, local artists, and rich maritime history.

  • The Fairy Glen: Enjoy a peaceful, magical woodland stroll in Rosemarkie to discover two hidden, cascading waterfalls.

  • Munlochy Clootie Well: Experience an ancient, quirky Celtic healing tradition at a woodland shrine draped in colorful offerings.

  • Time-Efficient Luxury: Discover the very best of the local area in just 4 hours, returning to your accommodation with plenty of the day left to enjoy.

What Awaits You on the Black Isle?

Crossing the Kessock Bridge from Inverness, the landscape instantly transforms into rolling farmland and scenic shorelines. While your private guide will customize the exact route to your interests, a typical half-day itinerary includes:

  • Dolphin Watching at Chanonry Point: Set on a spit of land extending into the Moray Firth, this picturesque spot—complete with a historic lighthouse—brings you incredibly close to the deep water channels. If the tide is right, you have a fantastic chance of seeing the world’s largest bottlenose dolphins hunting for salmon just meters from the beach!

  • Rosemarkie & The Fairy Glen: In the charming village of Rosemarkie, we’ll take a short, accessible walk up a beautiful wooded gorge. Surrounded by broadleaf trees and birdsong, the trail leads to a pair of stunning hidden waterfalls steeped in local fairy legends.

  • Exploring Cromarty: Located at the very tip of the peninsula, Cromarty is often called the Highlands’ most perfectly preserved 18th-century town. Wander through its narrow streets, browse local craft shops, admire the architecture, and grab a delicious locally-baked treat.

  • The Clootie Well: We’ll stop at one of Scotland’s most unusual historical sites. For centuries, pilgrims have come to the Munlochy Clootie Well to dip a piece of cloth (“cloot”) in the sacred spring and tie it to the surrounding trees as an offering to Celtic spirits for healing.

Tour's Location

Will we definitely see dolphins at Chanonry Point?

While the Moray Firth is home to a resident pod of bottlenose dolphins, they are wild animals, so we can never 100% guarantee a sighting. However, Chanonry Point is widely considered the best place in the UK to see them from land! Your expert guide will check the local tide tables to maximize your chances, as the dolphins are most active when the tide is turning.

Is this tour suitable for young children?

Absolutely! In fact, the Black Isle Half Day Tour is one of our most family-friendly options. The driving distances between stops are very short, meaning minimal time in the vehicle. Kids love searching for dolphins on the beach, walking through the mystical Fairy Glen, and seeing the colorful, slightly spooky Clootie Well.

Can we combine this with a whisky or brewery tour?

Yes! Because this is a private tour, we can swap out a sightseeing stop to include a visit to a local producer. We can head to the Singleton Distillery in nearby Muir of Ord for a whisky tasting, or stop at the renowned Black Isle Brewery to sample Scotland’s premier organic craft beers. Just let us know your preferences when booking.

Where does the tour depart from?

Because this is a 6-hour itinerary, it is designed to depart from Inverness or the immediate surrounding area. We offer convenient, door-to-door pick-up and drop-off at your hotel, guest house, or train station. If you are arriving on a cruise ship at the Port of Invergordon, please let us know, as this itinerary can also be adapted for shore excursions!

What should I wear?

We recommend dressing in layers. Even on a sunny day, the coastal breeze at Chanonry Point and Cromarty can be chilly. Comfortable, flat walking shoes are highly recommended for the beach and the woodland path at the Fairy Glen.

Excellent, probably the best yet.

This was an amazing trip. Totally fell in love with Vietnam, We did so much in such in two weeks. The cycling, somehow. only felt like a small part of the experience as there were so many other things that we did. Each day was full on, exceptionally well organised, great food, etc Been on a few cycle trips, and I think this was the best one so far.

Lifelong memories

We were part of a group of 17 who quickly formed a close bond created entirely by the enthusiasm and generosity of our leader. Nothing was too much trouble Long went out of his way every day to make sure we experienced in full life in Vietnam. The trip ran like clockwork, without us feeling we were being rushed at any stage. He made it fun even when we cycled 100 k in a day taking in a very high mountain pass.
