Welcome to Highland Private Journey. Prepare for one of the most breathtaking road trips in the world. Our private day tour to the Glenfinnan Viaduct and Mallaig takes you through the rugged heart of the Highlands, sweeping past deep lochs, towering glens, and pristine white-sand beaches.
Whether you are a Harry Potter fan longing to see the real-life route of the Hogwarts Express, a history lover tracking the footsteps of Bonnie Prince Charlie, or a traveler craving world-class seafood on the coast, this bespoke journey delivers it all. Sit back in our luxury vehicle and let your expert local guide show you the West Coast’s best-kept secrets.

Departing from Inverness, our journey begins by tracking the famous waters of Loch Ness and traveling south through the magnificent Great Glen. Along the way, we pass in the shadow of Ben Nevis—the UK’s highest mountain—before turning west toward the rugged coast. Your guide will share local legends, clan history, and point out hidden photographic gems along the route.

Arriving at Glenfinnan, you are greeted by two vastly different, yet equally iconic sights. First, we take the short walk to the viewpoint overlooking the magnificent Glenfinnan Viaduct. If the timing is right, you may even witness the famous Jacobite Steam Train puffing its way across the arches—a truly magical sight for Harry Potter fans of all ages!
Just across the road lies the sweeping expanse of Loch Shiel (which served as the “Black Lake” in the Harry Potter movies) and the towering Glenfinnan Monument. Here, in 1745, Bonnie Prince Charlie rallied the Highland clans, sparking the final Jacobite rebellion.

Leaving Glenfinnan, we continue along the legendary Road to the Isles. This stretch of road is celebrated for its dramatic coastal scenery. We will make stops along the way, including a visit to the stunning Silver Sands of Morar. With crystal-clear turquoise waters and pristine white beaches, you’d be forgiven for thinking you had been transported to the Caribbean, right here in the Scottish Highlands.

Our route concludes in the charming, bustling fishing village of Mallaig. Located at the end of the railway line and serving as the ferry gateway to the Isle of Skye, Mallaig is steeped in maritime heritage. Enjoy a leisurely stroll around the harbor, browse the local shops, and treat yourself to lunch. Mallaig is world-renowned for its seafood—we highly recommend trying the local fish and chips or a bowl of traditional Cullen Skink!
This specific itinerary is a private driving tour, which means we do not ride the train. Instead, our goal is to get you to the best vantage points to watch and photograph the train crossing the spectacular Glenfinnan Viaduct—an experience you can't get while sitting inside the train!
During the operating season (typically April to October), the train usually crosses the viaduct around 10:45 AM and again in the afternoon around 3:15 PM. Your guide will do their absolute best to time our arrival at the viewpoint to coincide with the train crossing, though please note that train schedules can occasionally vary.
Absolutely! This is one of our most popular tours for families. Seeing the "Hogwarts Express" bridge, viewing the "Black Lake" (Loch Shiel), and running on the white sand beaches makes for an incredibly magical and engaging day out for younger travelers.
We usually schedule lunch in the coastal village of Mallaig. It is famous for its exceptionally fresh seafood, great fish and chips, and cozy cafes. If you prefer to eat earlier or pack a picnic to enjoy on a beach, simply let your guide know—your private tour is entirely flexible.
Yes, this is a full-day adventure. The drive from Inverness to Mallaig takes about 2.5 to 3 hours each way. However, you will be traveling in spacious luxury, and the route takes you through some of the most stunning, constantly changing scenery in the world. We break up the journey with plenty of stops for photos, history, and stretching your legs!
